The pot that the tree has been in for the last two years was purchased when I was judging a show in China and it’s the right size for sure. BUT the quality is not great, it’s a good training pot but not good enough for exhibition. I intend to show this tree over the next three years so a change of pot was required. This Tokoname Bigei Pot is by – Mr. Hirata Atsumi and was purchased in 2016 for this tree.
I have been working this tree for 5 years, collected in 2011 its hard to imagine that this is the same tree. This is a photo when the tree was first potted up. the tree has been turned 180 degrees.
The tree has undergone two wiring, the second one today. Its been a process of building strength in the tree, developing branches and creating a dense foliage mass. I guess that it will be at least two more years before the tree is anywhere near showing. I have a lovely Gordon Duffet pot ready for the tree when it is potted next April/May.
I have been developing this tall Yew over the last 10 years (There is an old photo on my Home page) and it looks like its finally coming together as I would like. The long bottom right branch is taking ages to fill out, cutting back and pinching out needles to force new buds has been the plan for the last few years. I expect the tree to be show ready in three years, by which time I would have re-potted the tree prior to showing.
This is the first styling of the BIG Yew Bonsai, I have waited three years since the tree was potted into this pot, it was VERY healthy so now perfect for the work involved. There are no short cuts when it comes to creating a Yew Bonsai from raw yamadori stock, its a long process of structure, branch creation fine branches and foliage. I guess from mountain to Exhibition this will take 20 years, its already been 8 years since this tree came from the mountain, you can read earlier blog posts where I cut the tree in half, and Potting the tree for the first time
Good aftercare, considered channeling of energy to the areas that I wanted rapid growth and my Tibolar-RS feeding regime has produced this amazing growth on an ancient Yamadori yew that I call George… because he is an English Yew and was collected on St. Georges Day 4 years ago.
