Stephen is a photographer based in Washington, DC who works with clients like Time Magazine, Wired, NPR and The Wall Street Journal. He loves running, gardening with his kids and rock-climbing.

This from Stephen:

“I’ve loved bonsai trees since I first saw one almost twenty years ago at the National Arboretum in Washington, DC. I’m humbled when I think about the commitment of generations of bonsai masters who care for these trees.

What I love most about bonsai is the empathy of its practitioners that is reflected in these trees. Practitioners who care for and maintain trees that will outlive them, that will eventually be watched over by someone else, long after they’re gone.”

In search of Kusamono a visit to Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

In my constant search of small plant for Kusamono I visited the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh last month, The collection of alpines is said to be one of the best in the world. It includes a wide range of plants, from dwarf perennial trees and shrubs to bulbs, succulents and orchids. The Garden’s collection comes from mountainous regions all over the world, from Scotland and the permafrost regions of the Arctic to South Africa and New Zealand.

Door to the Tree Faeries

On my visit to Friends with family in Finland, I created this little door in the base of an old Pine tree, I told nobody that I was doing it and waited for someone to ‘discover’ it. Maja found it as it was alongside a path through the woods near the summer house next to the lake. She then told a story of the tree faeries that lived in the Pine, and they could fly because they had wings made from leaves!
